When the Iraqis attacked Khafji they thought they were attacking the soft center of the coalition. They underestimated the willingness of the small group of supporting Marines to fight back.
Air power had taken out all the Iraqi assets outside the city, but a large number of Iraqis still occupied the city. It would have been easy to turn back but there were Marines trapped in the city.
Time was of the essence. Marines were on a rooftop and Iraqis were in the stairwell. Whether or not those Marines came off that roof top alive was going to depend on how quickly their fellow Marines could deliver the fire power they requested. In the midst of the chaos, the Marines had a simple job to do. Whether or not they accomplished it would determine the fate of their fellow Marines.
This is a story about a group of young Marines who shared something uncommon, an ironclad commitment that we would never turn our backs on each other. No matter what.
